Alma Mater Newsletter (Öz Okulum)

Cover of the first issue of Alma Mater. In the spring of 1965, Istanbul’s Redhouse Press, formerly the American Board’s publishing department, launched the publication of Alma Mater - Öz Okulum, a bulletin for the alumni of the Board’s schools in Turkey: Talas American School, Tarsus American College; the American Collegiate Institute in Izmir; and the American Academy for Girls at Üsküdar, Istanbul. Designed to foster and maintain links between graduates, the magazine reported contemporary events at the four schools and news about outstanding alumni, especially those considered to have made important contributions to Turkey’s welfare.

The magazine was published in five consecutive volumes from 1965 to 1976 and intermittently in the 1980s and early ‘90s. From 1995 to 2002, it was issued in a revised format under the title Alma Mater Newsletter by the Health and Education Foundation (Saglık ve Eğitim Vakfı, SEV), which had been entrusted with ownership of the Board’s properties in Turkey beginning in 1968, and which acquired full administrative and financial supervision of its institutions in 1998. Alma Mater - Öz Okulumand Alma Mater Newsletter provide an exceptional record of four of Turkey’s oldest foreign-established schools in a period that witnessed their transfer from the founder’s control to local ownership and management.
